Terminal Fix

Another tiny experimental bone field, with strong connections to So Nothing and No Surrender, all of which share the same basic approach. For unlike many of the larger paintings, these small panels focus our attention on the arid beauty of the ashes themselves. They suggest to us something of what the artist first saw in his unlikely materials, a foreshadowing of the paintings to come.

Here the bone fragments are dark and sooty, self evidently the work of fire. Their clustering together suggests a natural - if hostile - landscape. But the metallic paint which fixes them down complicates this impression, revealing the man-made in the ready-made, represented by the bones.
