20th Century Art State

An unusual piece, as much sculpture as painting, 20th Century Art State - as its name might suggest - is unambiguous about its art historical connections. In this case, it is the 1942 sculpture Bulls Head by Pablo Picasso, currently in the Picasso Museum in Paris.

Picasso’s artwork famously is the welded-together seat and handlebars of an old bicycle, in such a way as to look like its name says it should: the head of a bull. Stealing unashamedly from the old Spanish masterthief, Crowder re-figures his own bull’s head, this time as a low relief.

Of course, it is not really carved, as an ordinary relief sculpture would be. Rather, it is formed out of impressions, where hard-edged objects have been pressed into a soft ground, in this case an ash/resin mix which has subsequently set solid.
